Director's Note:
by Darren Trongeau
The Tempest is widely accepted to be the last play attributed totally to Shakespeare, and many scholars and thespians often view it as his au revoir to the stage. As such, this is an ironic choice for me as this is my first directorial experience at the Dunes...and the first Shakespearean production since A Midsummer Night's Dream in the early years of the theatre's history! When I was first asked to direct a Shakespearean drama, I knew I needed to incorporate children into a fun play - something not too serious or overly tragic, but something with a range of emotion. The Tempest came immediately to mind! Not only does it elicit a range of emotions--frightening, serious, funny, romantic, but it also presents unique opportunities for child actors. Shakespeare calls for "several strange shapes" and, although children are not strange, I knew that they could act as the many spirits that inhabit this island, carrying out the biddings of Ariel and Prospero.
The creative process for this production has been amazing! I came into this show knowing that I wanted everyone in the cast and crew to feel comfortable offering suggestions to make this show a true group effort! Thanks to the creative energies and input from everyone involved, we have created a truly collaborative piece of the theatre that we hope wall will enjoy. I would like to thank Amy Crane for all of her support; she has been my theatre mentor, without whom I would never have arrived at this point! Thanks, again, to all of the parents for supporting their children's desires to act and to play with us all in this wonderful show! Finally, thank you to the entire cast and crew; your dedication, spirit, and passion have been inspirational to me at every point. Break a leg, all, and see you next year for more Shakespeare at the Dunes!

The Tempest(July 27 to August 5)
Shakespeare's classic tale of spirits, sorcery, monsters,
maidens and scheming noblemen is brought to life for the first time on the
Dunes stage. Adult actors will join with Children's Theatre, who will
provide nymphs and sprites for this production. The Tempest has
shipwrecks, magic, revenge, treachery and romance, and will delight us all!
